Why Have an Acceptable Use Policy?
An Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) is essential to provide guidelines for students to follow and a policy document for schools. Having written documentation in place allows guidance regarding consequences in the event of misuse incidents.
An Acceptable Use Policy is important in directing the course of technology use in student learning and can assist in providing schools with protection from liability.
Our actions, both online and offline demonstrate what we believe and where we place importance. Everyone who is active in the digital world has a responsibility to act in a way that is safe, appropriate, ethical, and supportive of others. Digital citizens make an effort to uphold a high level of integrity and character.
BFSMS students are encouraged to demonstrate positive digital influence. Digital influence reflects how technology use might have an effect on something or someone.
We focus attention on two main ideas: respect and protect.
Understanding that to respect something is to recognize it, honor it, and uphold it. Believing that to protect something is to conserve, guard, or defend it. We apply the “respect and protect” philosophy to four primary areas:
● Positive digital influencers respect and protect themselves. ● Positive digital influencers respect and protect others. ● Positive digital influencers respect and protect property. ● Positive digital influencers respect and protect rules.
Students must have a clear understanding of the expectations for their behavior. Acceptable use policies and procedures ensure the safe and effective use of technology for all parties.
